Since a stirring keynote address by Helen Keller at an early national conference Lions International has been the world’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to sight preservation.
The Wilmer Eye Bank, the Low Vision Research Foundation, Leader Dogs for the Blind and Camp Merrick are just a few of the entities you may be familiar with that exist because of the work of Lions Clubs. Each year millions of pairs of glasses are recycled and shipped from three major U.S. Lions processing centers to needy individuals throughout the world.
The Union Bridge Lions Club has been aiding in these efforts since charter in 1946. We see our mission as twofold: supporting national and international vision efforts and making our community a better place for all. Annual projects include blood drives each MLK Day and first week of July (July 2 this year), a community Health Fair, sponsoring the Northwest School Region’s art fair, an American Heritage essay contest at the schools, a peace poster contest, funding a $1,000 scholarship for a graduating FSK High senior, selling tickets at the Fireman’s Carnival, a community Halloween Party and Costume Contest, and financially supporting a broad spectrum of other worthy nonprofits and related efforts.
Fundraisers for these efforts include our annual Shrimp, Chicken and Oyster Feed, pecan sales in December, a basket bingo each spring, and a Chicken Corn Soup sale. |
